Business Management Goal Setting

A reality check in a mad, mad world!

It has been a crazy few weeks, hasn’t it? Political upheaval and uncertainty, mixed emotions (victories and disappointments) in the sporting world, terrorism, atrocities, and I’m sure that you’ve had your fair share of personal ups and downs to deal with too. Time for a reality check!

If you are small business owner, I’m certain there was one item that was not on your initial business plan when you started out: however many years ago that was. No one’s perfect business scenario included the desire for stressful responsibility, more hours than when they worked for someone else, and constant worry about making a profit or paying bills. Those things simply were not part of the plan – yet all too often they seem to barge their way through a small business owner’s door.

It doesn’t have to be that way!

Very few of us have the influence or ability to make any meaningful difference to the world’s problems. But we can have a significant effect on our own businesses and, in turn, on the lives of those closest to it and us. That power is in our hands if we choose to wield it intelligently.

I mentioned before the business plan or for some the big idea that started the ball rolling on day one of your business’s life. For most the plan went out of the window pretty quickly and they started sailing by the seat of their pants, reacting to whatever was in front of them and trying to dodge the thing that came next.

The simple answer, therefore, is to go back to the plan. Or to create a new one: then stick to it (or adapt it if necessary) and use it to deal with whatever challenge or objective you are facing.

The difference between a busy fool and a decisive doer!

Do you struggle to find time for the things that really matter? Wonder where your business is going, and why? Grapple with staffing problems? Work too hard, for not enough return? Would you like to sell more? Boost your profits? Build your brand? Win more good customers? Have more leisure time? And keep your business fresh in an ever-changing world? Do you feel like you are truly enjoying the benefits of being an entrepreneur?

  1. You need to have a plan: Most people start with today and decide where they want to go. Smart people start with the goal and work backwards: mapping out what would need to happen to meet each landmark along the way and setting up the tiny steps that they need to take to get them there.
  2. Prioritise and delegate: When you are clear about the ‘most important’ things that you need to do today to get you to where you want to be – you can delegate the rest. Do not get caught in the trap of getting too involved.
  3. Get good help: If you are still struggling to get the important stuff done, you need to get better help. That might mean adjusting the plan – and if it does DO IT – because your focus on the important things is the ONLY way to get to where you want to be.
  4. Keep focused: With everything in place, you can now concentrate on moving the plan forward. Get more customers, become more profitable, reward your staff, enjoy your business, take time off with the family, fulfil the plan to live the life you desired from day one.

I have done this in my life and business – so I know it works!
